When someone creates results for all the right reasons, it definitely shows. That’s the feeling you get when you work with Mary Ann Nelson-Sutterfield and the team at First American Title.

Mary Ann serves as the Oklahoma Direct Operations President for the company, bringing over 40 years of experience in the title insurance industry. Her career, which began in 1981, has been shaped by a commitment to leadership, community engagement, and a people-first approach. With her extensive experience, Mary Ann has seen the evolution of the industry and continues to lead with integrity and a deep focus on service.

A Long History in the Industry

Mary Ann’s journey into the title industry began in Norman, where she spent over 30 years with a title company before making the transition to Oklahoma City. As she moved through various leadership roles, she gained a wealth of experience in the business, all of which led her to her current role at First American Title.

“I’ve been fortunate to work in this industry for many years,” says Mary Ann. “When I started, the title industry was very different, but what has always remained constant is the value of building relationships and earning trust.”

Building a Culture of People-First Leadership

Since joining First American Title in 2021, Mary Ann has overseen 17 offices across Oklahoma and leads a team of more than 180 employees.  She credits much of the company’s success to the collaborative efforts of her leadership team.  “Our success is a direct result of our incredible team,” she says.  “While I’m responsible for the overall operations, it’s truly a collaborative effort that drives us forward.”

Among these key leaders is Don Neilen, State Sales Director, who has dedicated over 30 years to First American Title, fostering relationships and driving growth across the state. Shawna Rhines, State Escrow Manager, ensures exceptional service and operational excellence with her expertise. April Hendren, State Commercial Escrow Manager, leads with a commitment to efficiency and professionalism in the commercial space.

In addition to this exceptional leadership team, First American Title is strengthened by all the remarkable leaders and managers in offices across the state. These dedicated professionals are integral to driving the company’s mission and success, consistently setting new standards of excellence.

“I couldn’t ask for a more dedicated and talented group of individuals,” Mary Ann says.  “The team’s collaboration, experience, and innovative spirit is inspiring.”

First American Title is not just a leader in the title insurance industry but a leader in creating a workplace where people feel valued.  The company has been named one of the 100 Best Companies to Work For by Great Place to Work and Fortune Magazine for nine consecutive years and named one of the Best Places to Work for Women.

“We are a people-first company, and that is reflected in everything we do,” Mary Ann shares. “Our culture of care and empowerment is at the heart of what we do and is what sets us apart.  It’s an honor to work for a company that prioritizes its employees and communities.”

Mary Ann and her team foster an atmosphere of connection, both within the company and with clients. “It’s all about relationships,” she says. “Whether it’s a team member, a REALTOR® partner, or a client, the bonds we build are what make this work so meaningful.”

Service and Leadership Beyond the Workplace

Mary Ann’s approach to leadership is deeply rooted in her belief in service and community involvement. “I have always believed that leadership is about serving others,” she says. “Whether internally with our team or externally with our clients and partners, my focus is on helping others succeed. I take a servant-leadership approach because I believe it’s the best way to inspire and lead.”

This philosophy has led Mary Ann to actively participate in the title industry and the community. She has served on the board and was formerly president of the Oklahoma Land Title Association.  She continues to serve on the Legislative Committee and as a Trustee for the Okie TiPAC.  Mary Ann is passionate about working with REALTOR® and Lender partners and collaborating with others to improve the industry and make a positive impact.

Making a Difference in the Community

Mary Ann’s commitment to service extends beyond First American Title.  She is a proud member of the American Red Cross Tiffany Circle, a network of women leaders dedicated to supporting the organization’s mission.

Mary Ann’s passion for giving back is reflected in her commitment to helping the community. “I believe it’s important to make a positive impact wherever we can,” she says. “Whether it’s through our work at First American Title or through my personal involvement in organizations, I want to be part of something that makes a difference.”

Her focus on community outreach is evident in the company’s involvement in various charitable initiatives, where they actively work to support local causes and make meaningful contributions.

A Family-Centered Life

Outside of work, Mary Ann is a proud mother and grandmother. She and her husband are parents to seven children and have ten grandchildren. Family is incredibly important to her, and she cherishes the time she gets to spend with her loved ones.

“I absolutely love spending time with my grandkids,” she shares. “I especially enjoy having tea parties with my granddaughters and creating memories with them.”

In addition to her family, Mary Ann and her husband are active members of the Prix de West Society at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, where she enjoys being involved in preserving and celebrating the art and culture of the American West.

A Vision for the Future

“Our team is dedicated to advancing the First American title’s legacy of a People First culture.  The industry continues to evolve, and I’m excited about the opportunities ahead,” she says.  “At First American Title, we constantly innovate and find ways to better serve our clients and communities.  With our talented team and people-first approach, the future looks bright.”
